Easy Free Crochet Unicorn Pattern
Ukie the crochet unicorn has joined our Juna series of amigurumi animals! Amigurumi unicorns are amongst our most popular crochet toys and we know why. They’re so colourful and bring a bit of much-needed magic into our lives. This free crochet unicorn pattern is a really easy pattern for you to bring a little bit of that magic to your life!
When we began the Juna Series, we knew we wanted to crochet a unicorn plushie. Crochet unicorns are so brightly coloured and fun to make! When I started crocheting Ukie, I instantly fell in love. She is a sweet and cuddly little unicorn – and we can’t get enough of her.
Like all the animals in our series, this is an easy unicorn amigurumi pattern for beginners. Crochet this unicorn toy for the kid (or adult!) in your life – it is sure to be loved. If you’re anything like us, you will crochet this unicorn over and over again!
About this Free Crochet Unicorn Pattern
Ukie the Unicorn works up to approximately 8 inches tall using DK yarn and a 2.75 mm hook. However, you can use any yarn with the relevant hook that you would like – a number of our pattern testers crocheted her with worsted weight yarn.
If you were wondering how to crochet an easy unicorn, you will love this pattern! It uses very basic stitches and works up quickly. However, it has adorable details like the heart on its belly and cute little cheeks that really make it stand out (what is it about cute cheeks??).
The unicorn has a lovely colourful mane and tail that are crocheted on. While we’ve used pastel colours for the hair, you can experiment with any colour that you would like. In fact, this is a great crochet pattern for your scrap yarn!
The legs and head are crocheted in a single piece and we even have a tutorial on how you can crochet the arms onto your unicorn toy for even less sewing.

Crochet Unicorn Free Pattern
Abbreviations
Sl st: Slip stitch
SC: single crochet
INV DEC: invisible decrease
INC: two SC in the same stitch
HDC: half double crochet
DC: Double crochet
TR: Triple crochet
BLO: back loops only
Tools and Supplies You Will Need
- Yarn: You need less than 100 grams of DK yarn in cream and a small amount in beige, light pink, medium pink, lilac, light turquoise, and lemon yellow. I use DK yarn but worsted weight/aran yarn will work just as well.
- Crochet hook: For amigurumi, you typically go down one or two hook sizes from that recommended on your yarn label.
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch marker: You can use a locking stitch marker but even a scrap of yarn will do! This pattern is worked in the round, so place a stitch marker at the first stitch of each round so that you can keep track of where each row begins.
- Polyfill stuffing
- Safety eyes: I use 12 mm blue safety eyes or you can crochet eyes for children under 3
- Embroidery thread: A small amount of black for eyelashes and nostrils.
How to Crochet a Unicorn
Muzzle
Tip: The base shape of the muzzle is an oval, so we will be crocheting around chain, rather than a magic circle as we usually do with amigurumi. If you are new to crocheting around a chain, we have a tutorial on how to crochet ovals for amigurumi.
Use cream yarn
Round 1: Chain 6. Starting from the second chain from the hook, 4 SC, 3 SC in the next chain as your work turns. Now continue on the other side of the chain. 3 SC and INC in the last chain (12)
Round 2: INC, 3 SC, (INC) in each of the next three stitches, 3 SC, (INC) in the next two stitches (18)
Round 3: SC, INC, 3 SC, (SC, INC) three times, 3 SC, (SC, INC) twice (24)
Round 4: 2 SC, INC, 3 SC, (2 SC, INC) three times, 3 SC, (2 SC, INC) twice (30)
Round 5: 3 SC, INC, 3 SC, (3 SC, INC) three times, 3 SC, (3 SC, INC) twice (36)
Round 6-8 (3 rounds): SC around (36)
Round 9: (4 SC, INVDEC) six times (30)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Arms (make 2)
Tip: While this pattern tells you how to sew the arms on on, if you’d prefer to crochet them on, we have a tutorial on how to crochet arms onto your amigurumi so that you have a no sew way to attach the arms. Read through this before you begin the arms to ensure that you finish them in a way that they can be crocheted on.
Begin with beige yarn.
Round 1: 6 SC into a magic circle (6)
Round 2: INC in each stitch around (12)
Round 3: (5 SC, INC) twice (14)
Round 4-5 (2 rounds): SC around (14)
Round 6: (5 SC, INVDEC) twice (12)
Change to cream
Stuff the bottom of the arms lightly.
Round 7: (4 SC, INVDEC) twice (10)
Round 8-16 (9 rounds): SC around (10)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Legs (make 2)
Stuff legs lightly as you go.
Use beige yarn.
Round 1: 6 SC into a magic circle (6)
Round 2: INC in each stitch around (12)
Round 3: (SC, INC) six times (18)
Round 4: (2 SC, INC) six times (24)
Round 5: SC around BLO (24) change to cream
Rounds 6-12 (7 rounds): SC around (24)
Fasten off for the first leg.
Repeat rounds 1-12 for the second leg but don’t fasten off.
Body
Now we will join the legs of our unicorn. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, we have a tutorial on how to join legs for amigurumi.
Round 13: Sl st into the first unworked stitch of the first leg. SC in the remaining 23 stitches of the first leg and the 24 stitches of the second leg. (48)
Round 14-41 (28 rounds): SC around (48)*
*Note: If you want to the arms crocheted onto your amigurumi unicorn, this should be done as you crochet Round 29.
At this point, stuff the muzzle and sew it on between Rounds 30 and 39, centered to the front of your unicorn. Now that you have your muzzle in place, insert your safety eyes (but don’t insert the washer) between Rounds 37 and 38 so that they are evenly spaced on either side of the muzzle, approximately 12 stitches apart. Once you have finalised their placement, remove the safety eyes and embroider on lashes. Put the safety eyes back in and insert the washers. Stuff the body.
Round 42: (6 SC, INVDEC) six times (42)
Round 43: (5 SC, INVDEC) six times (36)
Round 44: (4 SC, INVDEC) six times (30)
Round 45: (3 SC, INVDEC) six times (24)
Round 46: (2 SC, INVDEC) six times (18)
Round 47: (SC, INVDEC) six times (12)
Round 48: INVDEC six times (6)
Fasten off. Insert needle in front loop of each stitch and pull tight to close. Sew the arms onto the body between Round 29 and 30.
Ears (make 2)
Use cream yarn
Round 1: 6 SC in a magic circle (6)
Round 2: (SC, INC) three times (9)
Round 3: (2 SC, INC) three times (12)
Round 4: (3 SC, INC) three times (15)
Round 5: SC around (15)
Round 6: (3 SC, INVDEC) three times (12)
Round 7: (2 SC, INV DEC) three times (9)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the head, starting around Round 4 of the head.
Horn
Use beige yarn
Round 1: 6 SC in a magic circle (6)
Round 2: SC around (6)
Round 3: (SC, INC) three times (9)
Round 4-5 (2 rounds): SC around (9)
Round 6: (2 SC, INC) three times (12)
Round 7-9 (3 rounds): SC around (12)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Stuff the horn and sew it centred to the top of the forehead, pointing slightly forward.
Cheeks (make 2)
Use lemon yellow.
6 SC into a magic circle. Slip stitch to the first SC and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew on either side of the muzzle, 2 rows below the eyes.
Embroider on two nostrils onto the muzzle in black embroidery thread.
Heart
Use pink yarn.
Make a magic circle and chain 3. Work the following stitches into the magic circle: 2 TR, 3 DC, chain 1, 1 TR, chain 1, 3 DC, 2 TR, chain 3, slip stitch. Pull the circle closed.
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the centre of the stomach.
How to Crochet the Unicorn Hair
Choose any five colours. I chose light pink, medium pink, lilac, lemon yellow and light turquoise.
Mane long strands (make 5, one in each colour)
Chain 40 and starting from the second chain in the hook, 39 HDC. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Mane short strands (make 5, one in each colour)
Chain 30 and starting from the second chain in the hook, 29 HDC. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew the longer curls in the row immediately behind the ears. Sew the shorter curls one row below. Use pins for placement and then sew all the curls on.
Tail (make 5, one in each colour)
Chain 25 and starting from the second chain in the hook, 24 HDC. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew onto the back of the unicorn, between rounds 17 and 18.
