crochet doll with two long side braids and a tankini

Zayna – Small summer crochet doll with braids (Free Pattern)

Zayna is a sweet little summer crochet doll in our Kozu Palm Pals series! She has a cute little crochet tank top (which would make an adorable tankini) and shorts to beat the heat. She is excited and ready for summer!

We love her long braids and bangs. Try making multiple outfits for her using the other free patterns in this series because who doesn’t love playing dress up with their dolls?

How to Crochet a Summer Amigurumi Doll

To begin, you will need to crochet the Kozu Palm Pals crochet doll body for your doll. Once you have crocheted the body, come back here and we’ll begin Zayna’s hair and clothes!

Hair Cap

Note: This pattern is for the a hair cap with two braids. However, any of the hair caps from our Kozu Palm Pals crochet dolls will fit this doll.

Round 1: SC 6 into a magic ring.

Round 2: INC in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: (SC, INC) six times (18)

Round 4: (2 SC, INC) six times (24)

Round 5-8 (4 rounds): SC in each stitch around (24)

Note: The hair cap width can vary based on the yarn that you’re using so try it onto your doll’s head and see if you want to increase or decrease rounds here before working on the final round.

Round 9: The hair cap instructions for this round can be confusing so I’m going to break them down into sections. Please note that the next section of bullet points are all for Round 9 of the hair cap:

  • First we will begin by making five bangs in the front of the head: (Chain 4, starting from the second chain on the hook, 3 sl back down the chain, slip stitch in the next SC in the hair cap) five times
  •  4 SC
  •  Now we will make 3 long strands of hair that will be braided for the first braid: *Chain 21, starting from the second chain from the hook, sl st back 20 stitches. You should now be at the bottom of your chain.  Sl st into the next SC of the hair cap* Repeat the part between ** for a total of 3 times
  • 5 SC
  •  Now we will make 3 long strands of hair that will be braided for the second braid: *Chain 21, starting from the second chain from the hook, sl st back 20 stitches. You should now be at the bottom of your chain.  Sl st into the next SC of the hair cap.* Repeat the part between ** for a total of 3 times
  • 4 SC
  • Slip stitch into the first stitch of this Round.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Put pins to position the bangs where you would like them to be. As you are sewing on the hair cap, make one stitch into each of the bangs to hold them in place. Now braid the hair and tie a piece of yarn tightly around each braid to hold it in place.

Clothing

Note: This pattern comes with shorts and a crop tank top. However, the clothes are removable so you can dress her up with the clothes from any of the other dolls in our Kozu Palm Pals dress up crochet dolls series.

Tip: The clothes were designed using the same hook and yarn size as the doll. However, as you are making the clothes, keep trying them on your doll to ensure that they fit. If they are too snug or too big, you can go up or down a hook size. The clothes should be put onto your doll from legs up, rather than over the head.

The clothes are crocheted in joined rounds. The slip stitch and chain between rounds do not count as stitches.
