Ferdi the Crochet Fox and Walt the Crochet Wolf Free Pattern

Try this cute crochet fox and wolf amigurumi pattern!

Ferdi the crochet fox and Walt the crochet wolf love playing hide and seek in our garden. We love these little guys. They are part of our Juna series of crochet animals and we love crocheting them!

Crochet foxes are some of the cutest animals around! That burnt orange colour is so lovely. Plus a crocheted fox toy is such a sweet addition to any nursery (especially if you have a woodland themed nursery!). So we had to crochet a fox to add to our animal collection.

But once we had crocheted a fox, we realized that we had to add a crochet wolf too! When all three of my boys were little, they were all obsessed (and I mean obsessed!) with the three little pigs. They would for hours on end enact the wolf trying to blow down the houses of the pigs. Wolves have been a very prominent part of our household and so I had to crochet a wolf for the boys (but our Walt is a good wolf – not the kind that tries to blow your house down!).

This crochet wolf and fox amigurumi pattern was initially released as a Crochet-Along — our very first CAL! We loved seeing all the adorable crochet foxes and crochet wolves that everyone came up with. However, we have now amalgamated the pattern so that it is easier to follow without having to flip through pages. If you want to stay informed about our future CALs, be sure to sign up to our newsletter to stay informed!

We also have an adorable pattern for a crochet fox and wolf baby rattle – and the combination of a crochet fox or wolf toy with a matching rattle would make such a cute baby gift!

About this Crochet Wolf and Fox Amigurumi Pattern

The pattern to crochet the wolf and fox are exactly the same – the only difference being the colour. So just choose which one you want (or do both!) and use grey or orange accordingly.

We have two options of overalls in this pattern. Our wolf is wearing overalls without a bib and the fox with one. However, you can interchange these as you like.

This pattern, like all the patterns in our Juna Series of animals, is worked up in one piece from the head and body. You also have the option to crochet on the arms on your fox or wolf – making it one less piece to sew!

The snout on our crochet toy wolf and fox are made in two colours around. This can get tricky – however, just follow the instructions and you should be fine!

Our crochet along for this pattern had crocheters of all skill levels who managed the pattern easily – so go ahead and give it a try!

Tools & Supplies You Will Need

  • Yarn: You need less than 50 grams of DK yarn in orange (for the fox) or grey (for the wolf) and a small amount in white, black, and the overalls colour of your choice. We use DK yarn but worsted weight/aran yarn will work just as well.
  • 2.75mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Polyfill stuffing
  • Two 10 mm safety eyes or you can crochet eyes for children under 3
  • Embroidery thread in black for the eyebrows
  • Buttons: If you decide to do the overalls with the buttons, you will need two large buttons of the colour of your choice.

Arms (make 2)

Begin with black for your fox or white for your wolf
Round 1:

Tip: If you want to attach the arms to your fox or wolf using crochet when you make the body (it’s a really easy no-sew way!), see our tutorial on crocheting arms to your amigurumi to see how to finish off the arms.

If you prefer to sew the arms to your fox or wolf, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Do not stuff the rest of the arm.

Muzzle

crochet wolf muzzle

Tip: The muzzle can be a little tricky because there are a lot of colour changes, since each row is done in two colours. When changing colours between orange/grey and white, there is no need to cut the yarn and re-attach. Just pull the new colour up each time. When bringing in the new colour, do not keep the yarn taut. Allow it to have some give as you pull it across so that it doesn’t affect the shape of the muzzle.

Begin with black yarn

*If you are crocheting on the arms for your fox or wolf, you will attach them in Round 28. See the tutorial on how to crochet on the arms for instructions. If you are planning on sewing on the arms, you will sew them on once we are done with the body.

Change to white

Rounds 29-34 (6 rounds): SC around (48)

Change to orange/grey

Round 35-41 (7 rounds): SC around (48)

incomplete crochet fox with the muzzle and eyes inserted

At this point, stuff the muzzle and sew it on, centered to the front of the body, aligning the white and orange/grey from the muzzle and the body. Use the white yarn tail to sew on the white part and they orange/grey yarn tail to sew on the orange/grey part. Make sure that you keep the colour changes of the body in the back, to allow for a neater finish.

Insert eyes between rounds 36 and 37, so that they are evenly spaced on either side of the muzzle, approximately 12 stitches apart.

Embroider on a mouth and eyebrows. If you’d like to add eyelashes, embroider them on at this point too.

Stuff the body.

Round 42: (6 SC, INVDEC) six times (42)

Round 2: (SC, INC) twice (6)

Round 3: SC in each stitch around (6)

Round 4: (SC, INC) three times (9)

Round 5: SC in each stitch around (9)

Round 8: (2 SC, INC) four times (16)

Round 9-11 (3 rounds): SC around (16)

Round 12: (2 SC, DEC) four times (12)

Round 13-15 (3 rounds): SC around (12)

Round 17-18 (2 rounds): SC around (9)

Round 19: (SC, DEC) three times (6)

Fasten off. Insert needle in front loop of each stitch and pull tight to close. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Sew the tail on at round 20 where the overalls colour ends and the orange/grey begins, centred at the back of your fox or wolf. When you sew on the tail, ensure that your fox/wolf can stand up with the tail placed where it is (it’ll lean on the tail in the back like a tripod).

Overalls

There are two styles of overalls that you can choose from: one with a bib (that our crochet fox is wearing) and one without a bib (worn by our crochet wolf). Decide which one you would like to make and follow the relevant instructions.

Overalls with bib (on our crochet fox)

Using overalls colour

We will be crocheting along front loops of round 20. Identify the front 14 stitches and place stitch markers on both sides to mark them. Attach yarn to the stitch marked on the right side and work your way towards the left.

We will be crocheting in rows. The chain 1 at the end of each row does not count as a stitch.

Row 1: Chain 1, SC in each stitch across, Chain 1 and turn.(14)

Row 2-6 (5 rows): SC in each stitch across, chain 1 and turn (14)

Row 7: SC in each stitch across (14)

Now we will make the straps, wrapping them around the tail and coming out of the other side.

Chain 50 (this may vary for you so just chain the length needed to go from one side of the bib, wrap around the tail in the back, and come back to the other side of the bib). Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Wrap the tail around the tail and sew it onto the top right of the bib. Make a small stitch to keep the strap in place at the shoulders and tail, to make sure it doesn’t slip off. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Chain 71 (this may vary, so measure a length that can go from the top of one side of the pants, over one shoulder, around the tail, and back to the other side of the pants, plus one extra for the turning chain). Starting from the second chain on your hook, SC back in each chain (70). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the straps in front from both sides, about 8 stitches apart, and put a stitch on each shoulder and the tail, so that it doesn’t slip off. Sew 2 buttons where the straps attach to the pants.
