Hattie the Hippo Crochet Baby Rattle Free Pattern

Introducing our hippo crochet baby rattle free pattern

As our series of crochet baby rattles keeps growing, we want to introduce you to one of our favourites – our hippo crochet baby rattle! What is it about crochet hippos that is so cute? If we’re really honest, the real life ones are, um, not the cutest (don’t get me wrong – they’re awesome but I just wouldn’t describe them as CUTE) but as soon as you crochet a hippo – so stinkin’ CUTE! So, of course, given this cuteness factor, we HAD to crochet an amigurumi hippo baby rattle for our crochet baby gift series!

Since we designed it, our Hattie the hippo crochet rattle has been very popular amongst our clients. People love to pair it with our Hattie the Hippo amigurumi toy for a cute crochet baby gift set.

The best part about this hippo amigurumi rattle is that you can change the colours on the stem to match a baby’s nursery or even a baby blanket that you’re making. If you decide to make our crochet hippo plushie with your amigurumi hippo rattle, you can always customise the outfit to one of the other Juna series amigurumi animals – if you were looking to crochet a gift for a baby boy (although a skirted hippo would be cute for a boy too!).

If you would like an ads-free, print-friendly PDF version of our pattern, you can buy it from our Ravelry store.

How to crochet your hippo baby rattle

Rattle Base

To begin, you need to crochet the base of your rattle. You can get that pattern from our Flippy the frog crochet baby rattle pattern. However, note that you will begin your rattle in gray (or whatever colour you prefer to crochet for your hippo’s head), rather than the green for the frog rattle.

Once you have finished the base, come back here so that we can continue!

Ears (make 2)

Using grey

Round 1: 6 SC into a magic circle (6)

Round 2: INC in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: SC around (12)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Lightly pinch the bottom of the ear and sew it together to make the bottom slightly pointed. Sew onto the head at approximately Round 4.

Eyes (Make 2)

Using embroidery thread

Round 1: 4 SC into a magic circle (4)

Sl st to the first SC. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Muzzle

Tip: The base shape of the muzzle is an oval, so we will be crocheting around chain, rather than a magic circle as we usually do with amigurumi. If you are new to crocheting around a chain, we have a tutorial on how to crochet an oval for amigurumi.

Use grey yarn

Round 1: Chain 6. Starting from the second chain from the hook, 4 SC, 3 SC in the next chain as your work turns. Now continue on the other side of the chain. 3 SC and INC in the last chain (12)

Round 2: INC, 3 SC, (INC) in each of the next three stitches, 3 SC, (INC) in each of the next two stitches (18)

Round 3: INC, 5 SC, INC, 2 SC, INC, 5 SC, INC, 2 SC (22)

Round 4: INC, 7 SC, INC, 2 SC, INC, 7 SC, INC, 2 SC (26)

Round 5: INC, 8 SC, (INC, SC) twice, INC, 8 SC, (INC, SC) twice (32)

Round 6: (14 SC, DEC) twice (30)

Round 7: (3 SC, DEC) six times (24)

Round 8: (2 SC, DEC) six times (18)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew the muzzle onto the rattle head between Rounds 11 and 15. Sew the eyes at approximately between Rounds 8 and 10. Use white embroidery thread and embroider on eye glints on each eye.
