This small crochet hippo is the next member of our cute Kozu Palm Pets series of small crochet animals! With its chubby little snout and tiny ears, this little hippo is just too cute to resist. The best part? This little amigurumi hippo takes just a couple hours to crochet. So you can whip up a whole herd of mini hippos in no time! Or, if you prefer, you can crochet this hippo along with all the other small crochet animals in the Kozu Palm Pets series.

About this Small Amigurumi Hippo Pattern
This mini hippo pattern is great for beginners looking to practice basic amigurumi techniques like working in the round and shaping with increases and decreases. It takes approximately two hours to crochet so it’s a really quick project to finish!
Using DK yarn and a 2.75 mm crochet hook, it turns out to be approximately 4 inches in height. Want a bigger hippo? No problem! We used super bulky yarn with a 7mm crochet hook and our hippo turned out to be 11 inches tall!

Feel free to use any colour yarn that you like – you could go with gray or blue for a more realistic looking hippo. But why not try pink or purple for just a splash of colour?

Small Hippo Crochet Pattern Notes
- Difficulty level: Easy
- Finished size: Approximately 4 inches tall, using DK yarn.
- This pattern is written in US terms
- This pattern is crocheted in continuous rounds unless specified otherwise. Use a stitch marker on the first stitch of every round so that you don’t lose track of the start of your round.
- This hipp pattern is a low-sew amigurumi pattern. The legs, body, arms, and head are all crocheted in. You must first crochet the arms before continuing onto the body.
- This hippo was made using DK yarn. However, you may use any yarn with the relevant hook (usually, for amigurumi you go down 2-3 sizes from that recommended on the yarn label).
- Sizing adaptations: You can make the hippo in multiple sizes. We made it using DK yarn and a 2.75 mm hook and it turned out to be approximately 4 inches tall. In velvet yarn with a 3.25 mm hook, it was approximately 6 inches tall. And with super bulky blanket yarn with a 7 mm hook, it was approximately 11 inches tall.
