Design Your Own Crochet Doll : Crochet Along

It’s Finally Happening! (April 28-May 12, 2026)

I’m so excited to finally announce this: our Design Your Own Crochet Doll Crochet-Along (CAL) is here!! This little idea has been brewing in our heads for ages (think: years!). And now it’s finally ready.

But here’s the twist: this CAL is not like any we’ve done before. Nope, not even close. There’s no new pattern. In fact, there isn’t even a single pattern. Instead… YOU are the designer!

Confused? Let me explain!

How it Works

We’ve created the cutest little Design Your Own Crochet Doll worksheet (throw back to those paper dolls we all used to cut out and dress up as kids!).

  • The 7-page worksheet has a doll body (based on our Kozu Palm Pals series) and cutouts of 16 hairstyles and 17 clothing options. Plus, they can be mixed and matched for a much much larger variety!

Your child (or the kid in YOU) can grab crayons, scissors, and glue and design their dream doll.

Then we’ll share the crochet patterns for each piece. And you’ll crochet that drawing to life with your yarn and hook.

How ridiculously fun is that?! And get this, you don’t need to be an advanced crocheter for this. This CAL is beginner-friendly and super easy to do!

So get ready to crochet up a doll that’s as unique as the one who designs it.

We can’t wait to see what you dream up.

Materials You Will Need

As we wait for the Crochet Along to begin, you can get prepared by ensuring you have all the materials necessary:

  • A Printer: Make sure you will have access to a printer on the first day so that you can print out the design template.
  • Crayons, Markers, or Colour Pencils: Get your hands on some fun colours so that you’re ready to design your doll! (Keep in Mind: You will need yarn to match the colours that you use!)
  • Scissors and Glue
  • Yarn: You will need yarn on hand to crochet the doll. This is a great time to use scrap yarn! However, you won’t know the colours that you will need until you have finished designing your doll (which is why we have kept the scheduling for the CAL spacious so that it gives you time to get any materials you need!). Your doll will be 4-4.5 inches using DK or worsted weight yarn. However, if you want a larger doll, try using plush yarn! With super bulky plush yarn, your doll can be 12 inch tall!

Schedule

The CAL will be released in three parts, between April 28 and May 12 . We’ve kept the schedule very spacious.

The links to each part will go live at midnight (EST) on the day that the part is scheduled to be released (if you click on them early, it will say that the page doesn’t exist!).

Part 1: April 28 – Design Your Crochet Doll

In this part, you will receive your worksheet. Then it’s time to print it out and begin designing!

Part 2: April May 5 – Crochet the Doll’s Body

Here we will reveal the patterns for each of the clothing options for the dolls. And using those, you will begin crocheting your doll’s body, including its clothing.

Part 3: May 12 – Crochet the Doll’s Hair & Share Your Final Doll

Here, we will share the patterns for each of the doll’s hair options. So now you can make your final doll. And then time for the best part! Share your doll so that we can all ooh and aah over each other’s creations!

Crocheting in Community

And here’s the cherry on top: you won’t be crocheting alone. As always, the magic of a crochet along is in our Chai Coffee Crochet Facebook community. That’s where you can share your designs, your WIPs, your “oh my goodess, why did my kid use so much black crayon!” moments—and we’ll all cheer each other on. If something looks tricky (like if your kid went rogue with the template!), we’ll figure it out together.

Crochet Along (CAL) Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CAL?

A CAL, or a crochet-along, is an event where we all crochet the same thing. It’s a really fun way to connect with other crocheters around the world by working on the same project together.

This CAL has a bit of a twist. Rather than using the same pattern, we will all be using the Design Your Own Doll worksheet to design our own dolls. Then we will be using patterns for each of the parts to crochet them.

What do I have to do to participate in the CAL?

To join our CAL, there are no requirements, you just have to participate! There are many ways you can do this:

  • Be sure to sign up for our newsletter above to get notified in your Inbox of each part as it’s released.
  • Since a crochet along is about crocheting in community, it may be fun to join our Facebook Community, so that you can share your progress each day and we can all help one another by answering questions, clarifying any confusion, or just oohing and aahing and supporting one another!
  • You can also share your progress on Instagram using the hashtag #chaicoffeecrochetcal and tag us @chaicoffeecrochet  Plus, you can follow the hashtag to see the progress of others on Instagram and admire their creations! We will also share projects in our stories during the CAL.

What skill level do I need to join the CAL?

This CAL is suited to crocheters of all skill levels! While it may seem complicated, the patterns are simple. Plus, we will try to share tips and tricks that will make it even easier as we go along. And if you’re ever having any trouble, you can always reach out to our Facebook community so that we can all jump in and help one another.

What yarn should I use and what size will my doll be?

You can use whatever yarn you have on hand (or enjoy working with). Just be sure to use the correct hook size for the yarn that you use (in amigurumi, you typically go down a couple hook sizes from the hook size recommended on the yarn label to allow for tighter stitches so that your stuffing doesn’t show).

Your doll will turn out to be appoximately 4 to 4.5 inches tall using DK yarn or worsted weight yarn and a 2.75 crochet hook. However, if you would like to make a large doll, try using plush yarn! These dolls turn out to be approximately 12 inches tall using super bulky blanket yarn and a 7mm crochet hook!

What if I fall behind and can’t keep up with the pattern as it’s released?

That is not a problem at all! There is no compulsion to finish the project based on the deadlines – it’s just a fun way to participate. The worksheet and pattern will continue to be available for free after the CAL is complete and so you can complete the pattern in your own time.
